The next day, Brody took me on our first official date. We drove to the next town over and he parked on the side of the road. There were nothing but trees around us. He pointed at a small wooden sign.

“We’re going on a paddle boat?” I clapped my hands together, unable to hide my grin.

“On a romantic paddle boat ride,” Brody corrected me, adjusting a classic-looking picnic basket. “I brought chocolate-covered strawberries and sparkling grape juice.” He opened the basket, presenting the contents proudly.

“You sure know how to treat a lady.”

I leaned up, kissing him on the cheek. He paid and the friendly older man assured me there were no alligators in this lake. Our boat was bright orange and charmingly used. We lazily pedaled to the middle of the small lake. Brody rocked us back and forth, messing with me.

“You’re going to tip us over!” I warned him, laughing, trying to sound stern, unable to frown at his boyish smile.

“What are you going to give me if I stop?” Brody was wearing a mischievous grin. He kept rocking the boat.

“How about a kiss?” I popped a strawberry in my mouth.

“I like where this is going. What else?” Brody took a sip from his plastic champagne flute.

“Come here and I’ll tell you,” I whispered, leaning over the boat. Brody slid closer with an excited grin.

“Gotcha!” I splashed him in the face.

Wiping the water from his eyes, he shook his head.

“You look a little hot. Maybe you could use a swim?” he asked with a glint in his eye.

I giggled, lifting my hands in front of me.

“Truce?”

He considered my offer, looking down at my white dress.

“Fine, your dress is really pretty. I wouldn’t want to ruin it,” he said.

He was wearing a green button-down and white shorts.

“You look very handsome, Brody Williams.” I complimented him back, staring shyly at the lake. His warm arm wrapped around my shoulders.

“It’s crazy how fast I’ve fallen for you.” He sweetly kissed my nose.

“I want to know more about you,” I murmured, reaching up and running a hand through his hair.

“Ask me anything.” Brody tightened his arm around me, closing his eyes while I continued to play with his blonde hair.

“What did you think when you first saw me?”

I’d been wondering about this for a while. Our first date seemed like the perfect opportunity to ask him. Brody’s eyes shifted.

Was it bad?

“Honestly?”

“Of course.” My voice had a slight edge to it.

“My first thought was, ‘I want to kiss this girl.’” He wouldn’t look me in the eye. “Shit, I sound like a creep.”

I lifted his chin, kissing him lightly. He tasted like strawberries. “I even remember what you were wearing, I’m such a stalker.”

His shy smile was my favorite.

“What was I wearing?” I asked, resting my head on his shoulder, paddling us aimlessly around the lake.

“A black and white striped shirt and jean shorts. If I’m being completely truthful, my next thought was about your ass.” I felt his chest move as we laughed.
